Hey,
it's Marc.
A while ago
I noticed something strange.
I was about to have
a difficult conversation.
Nothing had happened yet.
Nobody had said anything.
I was just sitting there
thinking about it.
But my body
was already reacting.
My heart was beating faster.
My shoulders felt tense.
My breathing changed.
It was almost as if
the conversation
was already happening.
That's when I became fascinated
by something your brain
does constantly.
It predicts.
Your brain doesn't simply wait
for the world to happen
and then react.
It's constantly trying
to anticipate
what might happen next.
What will this person say?
Will this situation be safe?
Could something go wrong?
What should I prepare for?
Most of this happens
without you noticing.
And usually,
it's incredibly useful.
Prediction helps your brain
prepare your body
before something happens.
But there's a downside.
Your brain can prepare you
for things
that never actually happen.
Think about how often
you've worried about
a future conversation.
A meeting.
A presentation.
A decision.
An upcoming event.
You imagine
what could go wrong.
Then another scenario.
Then another.
Meanwhile,
your body starts responding
to those predictions.
The event is tomorrow.
But the stress
is happening today.
What helped me
wasn't trying
to stop thinking about the future.
That's almost impossible.
Instead,
when I noticed myself
running negative scenarios,
I started asking:
"Is this happening right now?"
Not:
"Could this happen?"
Not:
"What if it happens?"
Just:
"Is it happening right now?"
Most of the time,
the answer was no.
And that simple question
helped me separate
what was actually happening
from what my brain
was predicting.
The lesson
Your imagination
is powerful.
Powerful enough
to make your body prepare
for a future
that hasn't happened yet.
That's useful
when you're preparing
for something real.
But exhausting
when you're constantly rehearsing
problems that may never exist.
So the next time
you notice your body getting tense,
ask yourself:
"Am I reacting to reality...
or to a prediction?"
Sometimes
that distinction alone
is enough
to change your state.
