Why You Feel Like You’re Always “Almost Okay”
A friend told me something that stayed in my head all week
He said
“I’m not really unhappy
but I’m not really happy either”
It was a Wednesday night around 9 03 PM
He had just come home from work
made dinner
cleaned the kitchen
and sat on the couch in silence
The TV was on but he was not watching
His phone was nearby but he was not scrolling
He just sat there staring at the wall
feeling this quiet in between
He said it felt like living in grayscale
not dark
not bright
just muted
When he woke up the next morning at 6 45 AM
the feeling was still there
That soft heaviness that makes you move slower
think slower
care a little less about everything
He said
“I get things done
I show up
I smile
but it all feels like I’m doing life through glass”
What does that mean
That middle ground between fine and fulfilled is where quiet burnout hides
Your brain is not collapsing
but it is not thriving either
It has adapted to constant stimulation
constant responsibility
constant noise
So when the world finally goes quiet
your mind does not know what peace feels like anymore
It only knows the next thing to do
Why this matters
If you have ever
told yourself “I’m fine” even though you feel disconnected
gone through your day like an actor reciting the same lines
or wondered when life started feeling so neutral
then you know this feeling
It is not failure
It is emotional fatigue disguised as functionality
And the danger is that it feels safe
You convince yourself this is just how adulthood feels
when in truth
it is your brain asking for a deeper kind of rest
What I would love from you
When was the last time you realized you were not unhappy
but also not truly alive
What moment made you notice it
