Why Small Problems Feel Overwhelming When Your Brain Is Tired
Last Thursday at 4:11 PM a friend called me from his office
He was frustrated
because a simple email had completely thrown him off
It was just a short message from his boss
asking him to adjust a few numbers in a report
nothing complicated
something that would normally take him 15 minutes
But at 4:11 PM he stared at the screen and felt frozen
The task looked huge
his chest felt tight
and he wanted to shut the laptop and walk away
He told me later that he had already pushed through a long morning of back to back meetings
barely ate lunch at 1:20 PM
and drank his third coffee by 2:30 PM
By the time the email arrived
his brain was running on fumes
and even the smallest request felt like a mountain
What does that mean
When your brain is mentally drained
it loses perspective
A small task feels enormous
a neutral message feels threatening
and simple choices feel impossible
Your nervous system interprets every new demand as a threat to limited resources
so it reacts with stress
even when the task itself is not stressful
Why this matters
If you have ever
felt paralyzed by something simple at the end of a long day
avoided small tasks because they felt overwhelming
or reacted strongly to minor requests
then you know this state
It is not the task that is heavy
it is your tired brain making it feel that way
What I would love from you
When was the last time a small problem felt far bigger than it really was
What time of day was it
and how did your body react
