Why Scrolling at Night Steals More Than Just Your Sleep
Last Friday at 11:42 PM a friend of mine sent me a message
It was nothing urgent
just a funny video he found on Instagram
The surprising part?
He had promised himself at 10:00 PM that he would go to bed early for once
But like so many nights before
one quick scroll turned into 20 minutes
20 minutes turned into 45
and by 12:30 AM he was still wide awake with the phone glowing inches from his face
The next morning he texted me again at 8:15 AM
āI slept almost 8 hours but I feel like I got hit by a truckā
He described his brain as foggy
his body heavy
and his motivation close to zero
It was Saturday morning and instead of feeling recharged
he spent the first half of the day in recovery mode
What does that mean
Late night screen time tells your brain it is still daytime
The blue light signals your nervous system to stay alert
blocking the release of melatonin and delaying deep sleep phases
So even if you log 7 or 8 hours in bed
your rest is shallow and fragmented
and your brain never fully resets
Why this matters
If you have ever
gone to bed āon timeā but stayed on your phone
woken up feeling groggy despite enough hours
or needed extra coffee just to feel awake on weekends
then you know this cycle
It is not a lack of sleep
It is a lack of recovery
What I would love from you
When was the last time you caught yourself scrolling long past bedtime
Was it out of habit
boredom
or just the feeling of wanting one more minute of escape
