Why Coffee Sometimes Makes You More Tired Instead of Awake
Last Monday at 10:18 AM a friend called me from his office desk
He said he had already drunk two large cups of coffee since 7:30
one right after waking up
another at 9:00 before his first meeting
By 10:00 he expected to feel sharp and focused
Instead he felt jittery
his heart was racing a little
and strangely his eyelids felt heavy
At 10:18 he laughed and said
“I honestly feel more tired now than before the coffee”
He told me this happens often
a short burst of energy
followed by a sudden crash around mid morning
leaving him reaching for yet another cup by 11:30
What does that mean
Caffeine does not create energy
it only blocks adenosine
the chemical that signals your brain to rest
When you drink coffee immediately after waking
adenosine levels are still high from the night
and once the caffeine wears off
all that adenosine rushes back into the system at once
The result is the crash
the tired heavy feeling that makes you want even more coffee
Why this matters
If you have ever
felt strangely drowsy after your morning coffee
found yourself needing cup after cup just to function
or noticed your energy dip harder mid morning than before
then you have experienced what happens when caffeine timing is out of sync with your brain chemistry
It is not that coffee does not work for you
it is that your system is working against the way you are using it
What I would love from you
When was the last time coffee gave you more fatigue than focus
Was it first thing in the morning
after a bad night of sleep
or just on random days you could not explain
