Hey,
it’s Marc.
A while ago
I caught myself making a mistake I didn't even realize I was making.
I spilled coffee on my desk.
And without thinking
I said,
"You're so stupid."
It wasn't loud.
No one else heard it.
But I did.
A few minutes later
I wondered something.
If someone spoke to me the way I speak to myself
would I want to spend time with them?
Honestly?
Probably not.
That's when something clicked.
Your brain is always listening.
Especially to you.
Most people believe stress only comes from work.
Or money.
Or relationships.
But sometimes
it's created by the conversation happening inside your own head.
"I'll never figure this out."
"I'm always behind."
"I always mess things up."
"I'm not good enough."
Your brain doesn't hear those thoughts as harmless comments.
It treats them as information.
Information about who you are.
Information about the world.
Information about what's safe.
And over time
those thoughts become patterns.
Those patterns become beliefs.
And those beliefs shape how your nervous system responds every single day.
Here's what I started doing instead.
Whenever I caught myself being overly critical
I paused.
Then I asked,
"Would I say this to someone I care about?"
If the answer was no
I changed the sentence.
Not into fake positivity.
Just into something true.
Instead of,
"I always fail."
I said,
"That didn't go the way I wanted."
Instead of,
"I'm terrible at this."
I said,
"I'm still learning."
The words were different.
But so was the feeling.
The lesson
Your inner voice becomes your nervous system's environment.
If that environment is constantly filled with criticism
your brain stays on alert.
But when it's filled with honesty and compassion
your body starts to feel safe again.
So today
pay attention to one thing.
Not what other people say to you.
But what you say to yourself.
Because your brain is listening.
Every single time.
Stay sharp,
Your Marc from Neurotweak
