Hey,
it's Marc.
Last month
I took an afternoon off.
No work.
No meetings.
No deadlines.
I told myself
"This is exactly what I need."
But something felt strange.
Even though I wasn't working
I couldn't relax.
After a few minutes
I reached for my phone.
Then I checked my email.
Then the news.
Then the weather.
I kept looking for something to do.
That's when I realized
my body had stopped working.
But my nervous system hadn't.
For a long time
I thought rest simply meant
not being productive.
But your brain doesn't measure rest
by how little you're doing.
It measures rest
by how safe it feels.
If your mind is constantly scanning
planning
or anticipating the next thing
your nervous system stays alert.
Even while you're sitting on the couch.
Even while you're on vacation.
Even while you're doing nothing.
This is why so many people say
"I had time off...
but I still feel exhausted."
Because physical rest
and mental recovery
are not the same thing.
What helped me
Instead of trying to distract myself
I started sitting quietly
for five minutes.
No phone.
No music.
No television.
Just slow breathing
and noticing the world around me.
The sounds.
The light.
The feeling of my feet on the ground.
At first
it felt incredibly boring.
Then it became peaceful.
And over time
my brain stopped expecting constant stimulation.
The lesson
Recovery doesn't begin
when you stop working.
It begins
when your nervous system realizes
it no longer has to stay on guard.
So if you've been resting
but still don't feel refreshed
don't ask:
"Did I take enough time off?"
Ask:
"Did my brain ever feel safe enough to truly switch off?"
Those are two very different things.
Stay sharp
