Hey,
it's Marc.
Last Sunday
I was sitting on my balcony.
Coffee in one hand.
Phone in the other.
Without thinking
I unlocked my phone.
Checked Instagram.
Closed it.
Opened my email.
Closed it.
Then opened Instagram again.
Less than a minute later
I couldn't even remember why I picked up my phone in the first place.
That moment made me realize something.
I wasn't looking for information.
I was looking for stimulation.
For a long time
I believed my attention span was getting worse.
That something was wrong with my focus.
But the problem wasn't my ability to concentrate.
The problem was that my brain had become used to constant novelty.
Every swipe.
Every notification.
Every new video.
Your brain releases a small burst of dopamine.
Not because the content is valuable.
Because your brain loves uncertainty.
"What might come next?"
Over time
your brain starts expecting that feeling.
And suddenly
normal life feels slow.
Reading a book feels boring.
Deep work feels uncomfortable.
Even conversations become harder to stay present in.
Not because your brain is broken.
Because it has been trained to expect constant rewards.
What helped me
I stopped reaching for my phone
during every empty moment.
Waiting in line.
Walking somewhere.
Sitting with my coffee.
I simply allowed myself to be bored.
The first few days felt uncomfortable.
Then something unexpected happened.
My focus slowly returned.
The urge to constantly check my phone became weaker.
And simple things started feeling interesting again.
The lesson
Boredom is not the enemy.
It is where your brain resets its attention.
If every quiet moment is filled with stimulation
your brain never gets the chance to recover.
So if you've been struggling to focus lately
don't immediately ask:
"How can I improve my concentration?"
Ask:
"When was the last time I allowed my brain to be bored?"
The answer might explain more than you think.
